Dear colleagues,

we are looking back to a well attended and successful Langendorff-Symposium in 2009 on “Imaging in Radiation Oncology”. In this highly interesting event, notable speakers from all over the world have led lively discussions with the international audience, where old and new personal relations in the respective professional and scientific communities were cultivated. After discussing the basic facts of imaging in radiation oncology tackeling morphological imaging like CT, ultrasound and MRI as well as functional imaging like PET and fMRI, we have now reached a point where we aim at highlighting the open questions in this field.

Therefore, the 2011 Langendorff-Symposium will address the “Pros and Cons on Imaging in Radiotherapy”. We have again invited notable national and international speakers to elucidate chances and risks of current development, who will address medical, biological and physical topics in the context of imaging for modern radiation oncology. Again, the symposium will cover imaging questions before, during and after radiotherapy and be of interest to all imagers, anyway if interested in morphological or functional imaging and to physicians and physicists in radiation oncology.

We are also very happy to host the 3rd meeting of the EORTC Imaging group. With the vision of providing and refining cancer imaging in clinical multicenter studies, the young group has firstly concentrated on the urgent task of standardisation. Now, its pace has geared up becoming involved in several EORTC study projects. Some of those will be discussed at the present meeting, followed by insights into the future of imaging in oncologic studies.

It is our pleasure to welcome you to both events in the beautiful city of Freiburg. We wish all participants and speakers a fruitful meeting with lively discussions in an inspiring atmosphere.
